Radon fan replacement and repair
Fans wear out. Here's how to tell, and what it costs to fix.
A radon system only works while its fan runs. South Dakota DANR estimates a radon fan lasts about 11 years and costs about $145 to $300 to replace.
Signs your system needs attention
- The liquid in the U-shaped gauge on the pipe is level on both sides, which means no suction.
- The fan is silent, or louder, rattling or humming more than it used to.
- Your last radon test came back higher than after installation.
- The system is more than 10 years old and has never been serviced.
What a contractor will check
- Whether the fan runs and is the right size for the house.
- Pipe joints, the roof penetration and any cracked or disconnected sections.
- Seals around the suction point, sump cover and major cracks.
- A follow-up test to confirm levels are back down.
Bought a house with a system already installed? It's worth having it checked, especially if you don't know how old it is.
